Four Arrested in Bolgatanga Robbery Crackdown; One Suspect Dies in Custody

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended four individuals suspected of orchestrating a series of armed robberies across the Upper East Region. The arrests, which occurred on May 5, 2026, in Bolgatanga, follow an intelligence-led operation targeting a gang believed responsible for attacks in the Talensi District and parts of the North East Region. One suspect, Amadu Rahman, died after collapsing during a police search operation.

Background of Operations

Police investigations indicate the suspects, identified as Abdulai Ibrahim, Amadu Rahman, Amadu Sulemana (also known as Saaga), and Adu Yakubu, convened in Gbane, a mining community within the Talensi District, on May 4. They had reportedly traveled from Yagaba and Fumbisi with the intent to conduct further robbery operations. During a prior incident on May 4, the group allegedly stole four motorbikes and several mobile phones.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to multiple robbery incidents. These include attacks along the Yagaba-Fumbisi and Yagaba-Nanguruma roads. Furthermore, they admitted involvement in the March 22, 2025, robbery of the Vikandi Phone Shop in Bolgatanga, an incident notable for a viral video depicting armed assailants, including one wielding an AK-47 rifle.

Confessions and Weapon Recovery

The confessions extended to several raids on mining sites in Gbane. The suspects allegedly targeted miners and residents, making off with significant sums of money and gold. Following these admissions, the police were led by the suspects to a farm near Biung, close to Gbane.

At this location, the alleged gang leader, Amadu Rahman, reportedly led officers to where an AK-47 rifle was hidden. The search yielded the firearm, bearing the serial number 68100563, along with 87 rounds of live ammunition. These items were discovered concealed within a fertiliser sack.

Incident During Search

Tragically, during the operation to retrieve the hidden weapon, suspect Amadu Rahman collapsed. He was immediately transported to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. Medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.

The body of Amadu Rahman has been transferred to the hospital morgue. It awaits preservation and an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The Ghana Police Service has initiated procedures to investigate the circumstances surrounding his collapse and subsequent death.

Legal Proceedings Ahead

The remaining three suspects are currently in police custody. They are being held as investigations continue. The police intend to present them before the court in the near future to face charges related to the multiple robbery incidents.

Implications and Future Watch

This operation marks a significant success for the Ghana Police Service in combating armed robbery in the Upper East Region. The arrests and confessions could lead to the dismantling of a notorious criminal network that has been preying on communities and businesses. The recovery of a high-powered rifle and ammunition highlights the serious nature of the threat posed by these groups. For residents and businesses in the affected areas, the news offers a degree of reassurance, though vigilance remains crucial. The focus will now shift to the judicial process and the police’s ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and apprehend any remaining accomplices. The circumstances of Amadu Rahman’s death will also be a subject of further scrutiny.
