Ghana and China Forge Deeper Ties, Emphasizing Friendship and Economic Partnership

Accra, Ghana – Chief of Staff Julius Debrah reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with China during the inauguration of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies’ 2026 executives. He highlighted the partnership as one built on trade, diplomacy, friendship, people-to-people connections, and shared prosperity, underscoring the significant role the Chinese community plays in Ghana’s economic growth.

A Longstanding Partnership

The event, attended by Mr. Debrah on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, served as a platform to acknowledge the enduring cooperation between Ghana and the Chinese community residing in the country. Mr. Debrah emphasized that the relationship transcends mere business or diplomatic dealings.

“Gatherings like this remind us that the relationship between Ghana and China is not just about business or diplomacy but also about people, friendship, and shared progress,” stated Mr. Debrah. He specifically lauded the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies for its consistent contributions to enhancing ties between the two nations.

“Over the years, your association has contributed meaningfully to Ghana’s growth, and we deeply appreciate the role you continue to play in strengthening the ties between our two countries,” he added.

Encouraging Future Cooperation

Congratulating the newly elected executives, the Chief of Staff urged them to continue fostering cooperation and creating opportunities. He encouraged the incoming leadership to “continue building bridges, creating opportunities, and deepening the spirit of partnership that has brought our communities so close together.”

Economic Policies and Industrial Vision

Mr. Debrah also commended China’s economic policies towards Africa, particularly the provision of tariff-free access for African products to the Chinese market. This initiative was cited as a clear demonstration of China’s support for the continent.

“When we look at the policies of the Chinese government — allowing African countries tariff-free access to export products into China — it clearly shows how much China values and supports Africa,” he remarked.

Furthermore, he reiterated the Mahama administration’s ambitious industrialization agenda, which aims to add value to Ghana’s natural resources through robust manufacturing and industrial development. The goal is to establish Ghana as a leading industrial hub in West Africa.

Leadership Continuity

The inauguration ceremony also saw the re-election of prominent businessman Mr. Tang Hong as President of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies. His continued leadership is expected to further solidify the influence and operations of the Chinese community within Ghana.

Looking Ahead

The deepening of Ghana-China relations, marked by this reaffirmation of partnership and mutual appreciation, sets a positive tone for future collaborations. Key areas to watch include the implementation of Ghana’s industrialization vision and the continued utilization of preferential trade access to China, which could significantly boost Ghanaian exports and economic development. The role of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies in bridging cultural and economic divides will also remain a crucial element in this evolving relationship.
