Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang commissioned 100 new Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) buses on Friday morning. This initiative is part of a government plan to deploy 300 mass transit buses nationwide to ease urban congestion and interstate travel.
Restoring Dignity to Public Transit
The newly commissioned buses have completed registration, insurance, and safety inspections. They are ready for immediate deployment to busy commuter routes across Ghana.
Speaking to MMTL management and Ministry of Transport officials, Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang stressed the importance of efficient public transport for national development. She highlighted the government’s aim to reduce commuter burdens and improve access on rural-urban routes.
The intervention seeks to provide reliable and affordable transit options. The ultimate goal is to restore public confidence and dignity in the state-run transport system.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended MMTL’s leadership and staff for their preparedness. She also thanked the Ministry of Transport and its partners for their collaboration in delivering the buses ahead of schedule.
A Vision for Local Manufacturing
The procurement of these buses aligns with Ghana’s broader industrialization agenda. The Vice-President expressed hope for a future where Ghana reduces its reliance on importing fully built vehicles.
This shift would encourage local participation in manufacturing and assembling transport components. Such a move could retain capital within the country and create skilled jobs for the youth, according to industry experts.
The Maintenance Ultimatum
Alongside the commissioning, the Vice-President issued a stern directive regarding the maintenance of the new fleet. She emphasized the need for proactive maintenance and operational discipline.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that past public transport systems suffered from poor maintenance. The current administration is committed to breaking this cycle.
She insisted that public investment must be matched by institutional accountability and high-quality service delivery. Ghanaians deserve a safe, reliable, and time-respecting transport network.
Government sources indicate the remaining 200 buses will be rolled out in phases. This reinforces the state’s commitment to infrastructure development and efficient public services.
