President John Dramani Mahama announced the procurement of 40 additional armoured vehicles for the Ghana Police Service during the commissioning of the Laasi Divisional Police Headquarters at Lower Manya Krobo. This initiative aims to significantly enhance the police’s capacity for high-risk combat operations and bolster national security.
Security Reset and Enhanced Operations
The upcoming acquisition will double the current fleet of armoured vehicles, bringing the total to 80. The initial 40 vehicles, acquired last year, have already proven effective in combating armed robbery and responding to volatile security situations across the country.
President Mahama emphasized the critical need to equip law enforcement officers with superior protection. He stated that the safety of the nation’s citizens is directly linked to the safety and well-being of those in uniform who protect them.
“When you send our officers to protect you and fight violent people, you have to provide them with the instruments and the tools to be able to do so,” President Mahama remarked during the ceremony.
Investment in National Development
The President framed the investment in security hardware as a foundational element for national progress. He argued that a stable security environment is essential for the effective functioning of public services and economic activities.
“Security remains the bedrock upon which national development can be built. Without peace and stability, there can be no meaningful progress, no quality education, and no thriving business,” he explained.
This focus on the security sector, particularly the police, underscores the government’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to growth and prosperity.
Modernising the Police Service
Beyond increased firepower and protection, the government’s vision extends to transforming the Ghana Police Service into a professional, modern, and people-centred institution. This includes a shift from traditional reactive policing to more innovative and intelligence-led operations.
The newly commissioned Laasi Divisional Headquarters exemplifies this modernization agenda. The facility is designed to support contemporary forensic and investigative needs, fostering better community-police collaboration in the Lower Manya Krobo area.
Broader Logistical Rollout
The deployment of the 40 new armoured vehicles is part of a larger, ongoing logistical enhancement program. The government aims to ensure the Ghana Police Service is well-equipped to handle the complexities of the current regional security landscape.
This strategic investment in tactical mobility and infrastructure signals a proactive approach to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all Ghanaians.
