Ghana Elevates Ebola Preparedness to National Emergency Level Amidst WHO Alert

The Ministry of Health in Ghana has activated stringent national emergency health protocols across all 16 regions in response to a declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) that the rare Bundibugyo Ebola strain constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. This move follows a critical assessment of the nation’s readiness at key entry points and medical facilities on Friday, May 29, 2026.

Assessing National Defenses

The heightened alert stems from an intensive operational tour led by the sector minister. This visit scrutinized border surveillance systems, isolation capabilities, and emergency preparedness at Ghana’s main international gateways. The tour included inspections at Accra International Airport (AIA), the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), and the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre (GIDC).

This comprehensive evaluation aimed to rigorously test the state’s medical readiness and cross-border surveillance mechanisms. The proactive measures are a direct reaction to the WHO’s declaration regarding the highly virulent Bundibugyo Ebola strain.

Strengthening Border Security and Public Health Mandates

At Accra International Airport, officials examined passenger screening points, thermal scanners, and emergency holding areas. The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, noted that while current checks are functional, the nation must adopt advanced, non-contact digital detection methods to minimize human error.

Minister Akandoh emphasized that institutional preparedness is insufficient without public cooperation. He issued a stern directive for all public institutions, transport unions, local authorities, and event organizers to immediately reinstate strict hand-hygiene and sanitation mandates nationwide.
