Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations Renews Commitment to Supporting Mothers of Children with Disabilities

Accra, Ghana – On Mother’s Day, the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting mothers of children with disabilities. Emmanuel Hagan, Human Resource Manager of the GFD, highlighted the organization’s dedication to ensuring these mothers’ voices are heard in policy-making processes. This affirmation came during a special event where the Inclusive Family Alliance, an affiliate of the GFD, celebrated its founder and Executive Director, Mrs. Hannah Awadzi, for her inspirational advocacy.

Context: The Advocacy Landscape for Families with Disabilities

Supporting families of children with disabilities in Ghana involves navigating complex social, economic, and policy challenges. Many mothers face immense personal burdens, including the emotional toll of caregiving, financial strain, and societal stigma. Historically, their specific needs and experiences have often been overlooked in broader disability policy discussions. Organizations like the GFD and its associate, the Inclusive Family Alliance, aim to bridge this gap by actively involving these parents in advocacy efforts.

GFD’s Pledge and the Inclusive Family Alliance

Emmanuel Hagan emphasized that the GFD will continue to push for the meaningful inclusion of parents in policy discussions. This involves ensuring their concerns are brought before relevant committees and considered in the development of legislation and programs affecting the disability community. The Inclusive Family Alliance plays a crucial role in this regard, acting as a platform for mothers to share their experiences and advocate collectively.
