Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) has initiated a comprehensive nationwide campaign to combat the rise of individuals impersonating licensed architects and foreign professionals practicing without proper authorization. This decisive action follows the recent arrest of a suspect accused of utilizing a duplicated architectural stamp and registration number belonging to a legitimate architect, underscoring a critical threat to public safety and professional integrity within the construction sector.
Context of Illegal Practice
The GIA’s intensified efforts stem from growing concerns regarding the authenticity of professional endorsements on building plans submitted to clients and regulatory bodies. The incident that triggered the current crackdown involved a duplicated stamp used to validate architectural drawings. A registered architect, upon noticing discrepancies, initiated a verification process at the GIA Secretariat.
This investigation uncovered that Fiati Kwame Edwin, who is not a registered architect, allegedly used the identity and registration details of Architect Anthony Parker-London, a fully licensed professional. This alleged impersonation allowed Edwin to illegally stamp and endorse building drawings, bypassing legitimate professional oversight.
Nationwide Crackdown and Legal Action
Mr. Tony Asare, President of the GIA and a Board Member of the Architects Registration Council (ARC), confirmed the arrest of the suspect by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The arrest was the result of a collaborative operation between the police and the GIA. The duplicated stamp has been recovered as evidence, and the GIA is committed to pursuing the case to ensure legal consequences for those involved in stamp duplication and architectural impersonation.
