Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Insurance University College (GIU) celebrated a significant milestone this past week as it officially transitioned to university status, coinciding with its 19th graduation dinner and awards ceremony held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. The event marked the culmination of nearly two decades of operation and heralded a new era of academic advancement for the institution, which aims to deepen its role in shaping Ghana’s financial and insurance sectors.

Malta’s High Commissioner Commends GIU’s Growth

Malta’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Ronald Micallef, lauded the GIU’s leadership, past and present, for its dedication. He emphasized that the institution’s 19-year journey signifies a profound commitment to knowledge, professional excellence, innovation, and service.

“Institutions such as this help shape the confidence of nations. They create professionals who do not simply respond to risk, but who build trust, resilience, and opportunity within society,” Micallef stated during the ceremony.

He highlighted the strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Malta, noting that cooperation in education and enterprise, particularly within the insurance and financial services sectors, has been a cornerstone of this relationship. Malta’s own development into an international financial hub was attributed to its investment in education, regulation, and specialized training.

Insurance Commissioner Urges Ethical Leadership and Continuous Learning

Dr. Abiba Zakariah, Acting Commissioner of Insurance and Chairperson of the GIU, addressed the 19th graduating class, commending their perseverance and dedication. She underscored that graduation represents a transition to greater responsibilities and opportunities within the insurance industry.

Dr. Zakariah stressed the critical need for insurance professionals to embrace continuous learning, innovation, and unwavering integrity. She praised GIU’s contribution to developing human capital for the sector, emphasizing education’s role in fostering professional excellence, technical competence, and leadership skills.

“Education is the foundation upon which professional excellence is built, empowering professionals to innovate and lead with confidence,” she remarked, also noting the relevance of the theme “Building the Future of Insurance” and the convergence of research, education, and industry.

Keynote Address Focuses on Professionalism and Ethical Influence

Augustine Kwame Addo, the keynote speaker, urged the graduates to serve as ambassadors for professionalism and ethical leadership. His address encouraged them to contribute to a stronger and more inclusive insurance industry.

Addo advised the graduands to remain steadfast in their values and to strive for leadership roles that positively influence society.

GIU Affiliates with University of Ghana, Announces New Programs

A significant announcement from the Rector of GIU, Dr. Richard Okyere, revealed the institution’s new affiliation with the University of Ghana. This partnership will allow GIU to commence enrolling students for academic programmes starting in September.

New programmes set to be introduced include a BSc in Actuarial Science with Insurance and a BSc in Insurance. Additionally, insurance-focused courses will be integrated into the BSc in Computer and Data Science programme.

Dr. Okyere expressed gratitude to the governing council, insurance industry leaders, resource persons, and other stakeholders for their sustained support. He also thanked the management and staff of GIU for their contributions and expressed optimism for the university’s future achievements.

University of Ghana Pledges Support for GIU’s Development

Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar of the University of Ghana, speaking on behalf of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, officially confirmed the affiliation. She assured GIU of the University of Ghana’s commitment to supporting its development and growth.

Enrollment for the new academic programmes, particularly in actuarial and data management sciences, is slated to begin in the upcoming academic year. Mrs. Agyei-Mensah also extended congratulations to the graduating class.

Malta International Training Centre Renews Commitment

Ramon Muscat, Director of the Malta International Training Centre (MITC), congratulated GIU on its university status and the graduating students. He reaffirmed MITC’s continued support, highlighting a partnership that dates back to 2006.

New Governing Council and Academic Board Sworn In

The ceremony also marked the official swearing-in of the new Governing Council and Academic Board members by Mrs. Naa Shormeh Gyang. This marks the commencement of a new administrative phase for GIU.

Several individuals and stakeholders were honored with recognition awards for their significant contributions to GIU’s growth since its inception as the Ghana Insurance College in 2006. The event concluded with the presentation of distinguished awards to top graduating students, including Farhan Zuwmini Shamsudeen for the Diploma in Applied Insurance Studies and Adwoa Pinaman Acquah for the Advanced Diploma in Applied Insurance Studies.
