Ghana Midwives Urge Government to Scale Up Specialized Training Amidst Rising Maternal Mortality

Accra, Ghana – In a significant call to action, the Ghana Registered Midwives Association (GRMA) has urged the government to prioritize and scale up specialized midwifery training and recruitment to combat the concerning rise in maternal mortality. The plea, articulated at a recent symposium in Tamale, highlights the critical need for increased investment in the midwifery workforce, particularly in underserved regions, to ensure better health outcomes for mothers and newborns.

Context: The Midwifery Crisis in Ghana

Maternal mortality remains a pressing public health issue in Ghana. Despite progress, the country continues to grapple with deaths that could often be prevented with adequate and skilled care. Midwives are at the forefront of providing essential maternal and newborn health services, yet challenges within the profession, including poor remuneration, heavy workloads, and inadequate recognition, hinder their effectiveness and retention.
