Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama announced on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, that Ghana will no longer offer automatic tax exemptions for imported medical equipment. Henceforth, such requests will be evaluated individually, marking a significant shift in government fiscal policy aimed at optimizing tax revenue while still supporting critical healthcare needs. The announcement came during the commissioning of a new positron emission tomography computed tomography (PET CT) scan facility at the Sweden-Ghana Medical Centre in Accra.
Shifting Tax Exemption Landscape
Responding to appeals for tax concessions from the operators of the new PET CT facility, President Mahama clarified that the era of blanket tax waivers for medical equipment is over. While automatic exemptions are discontinued, institutions importing specialized medical equipment can still apply for tax relief. Each application will undergo a thorough assessment based on its specific merits.
