Ghana Sports Minister Clarifies Black Stars Coach Carlos Queiroz’s Salary Below Reported Figures

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation has refuted widespread reports claiming new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz would earn a monthly salary of $100,000. Minister Kofi Adams stated on Asempa FM that the actual figure is less than this widely circulated amount, though the precise details are still being finalized.

Queiroz, who was unveiled as the new Black Stars coach last week following his arrival in Ghana on Wednesday, April 22, has been appointed on a short-term contract. This initial agreement is reportedly set to last for a maximum of four months, specifically covering the period leading up to and including the upcoming World Cup. Any extension of his tenure would be contingent upon the team’s performance during this crucial tournament.

The minister’s clarification comes amidst significant public interest surrounding the appointment of a high-profile foreign coach for the national team. Reports had suggested a lucrative package for the Portuguese tactician, leading to public discussion about the financial commitment involved. Minister Adams emphasized that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) sought a coach ready to take on the immediate challenge of preparing the team for the World Cup, irrespective of whether they were local or foreign.

“We needed a coach who is ready to take the team because we know the World Cup is just around the corner,” Adams explained. He further elaborated on the contractual terms, stating, “The condition we agreed was that we were going for a short-term contract, maximum four months, for the period of the World Cup, but the performance would determine any further agreement.”

When pressed on the specific salary figure, Minister Adams was firm. “We are not paying him $100,000. We are not paying him up to that amount at all,” he asserted. He acknowledged that the final contract details were still being processed, preventing him from disclosing the exact monthly remuneration. “I will check the figures, because we have not finalised and signed the full contract and everything, so I cannot give the exact figure, but it’s not up $100,000,” he added.

The appointment of Queiroz is seen as a strategic move by the GFA to leverage experienced international coaching expertise for the World Cup campaign. His previous experience coaching national teams, including Portugal and Iran, positions him as a candidate expected to guide the Black Stars through the challenges of the global tournament. The focus now shifts to how the new coaching structure will impact team performance and preparation in the coming months.

The clarification on salary figures aims to manage public expectations regarding the financial investment in the national team’s coaching staff. As the World Cup approaches, attention will remain on Queiroz’s strategies, team selection, and the Black Stars’ readiness under his guidance. The performance during the tournament will undoubtedly be the ultimate determinant of his success and the future of his role with the Ghanaian national team.
