Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has been urged by Michael Okyere Baafi, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism and MP for New Juaben South, to significantly enhance its revenue generation capabilities. This call came during a recent working visit by the parliamentary committee to the GSA headquarters, where discussions focused on the authority’s operations, achievements, and future plans. The objective is to ensure the GSA has sufficient financial resources to sustain its vital functions and expand its impact on national development.
Context: The Role of the Ghana Standards Authority
The Ghana Standards Authority plays a critical role in ensuring product quality and safety across various sectors of the Ghanaian economy. It is responsible for setting and enforcing standards, facilitating trade, and protecting consumers. The authority’s work is fundamental to Ghana’s industrial growth, international trade competitiveness, and public well-being.
Historically, public institutions like the GSA have relied on a mix of government funding and internally generated revenue. However, increasing operational demands, the need for advanced technological infrastructure, and expanding mandates often outpace traditional funding models. This necessitates a proactive approach to revenue mobilization.
