Ghana Tightens Tax Waiver Policy, Unveils Major Teacher Housing Initiative

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama announced on Thursday in Accra that the government will cease granting blanket tax waiver exemptions on import duties. Henceforth, such exemptions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, a significant policy shift aimed at fiscal prudence and targeted support.

Shift in Tax Waiver Policy

The President revealed this new approach while responding to a request for tax exemptions on medical equipment made by Mr. Justice Isaac Douse, a retired Court of Appeal Judge. Speaking on behalf of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Justice Douse highlighted the need for such exemptions during the commissioning of GNAT’s new state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scan facility at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC) in Accra.
