Ghanaian Businesses Need Deliberate State Support, Not Politics, Urges Finance Professor

Professor of Finance and Economics at the University of Ghana, Godfred Bokpin, has urged President John Mahama to champion the growth of indigenous Ghanaian businesses as a cornerstone of his presidential legacy. Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, May 21, Bokpin argued that Ghana’s economic strength is hampered by the politicization of business support, advocating for a non-partisan, strategic approach to nurture local entrepreneurs for continental and global competition.

Politicization Hinders Growth

Professor Bokpin highlighted that genuine entrepreneurs often shy away from state support due to fears of political tagging and potential victimisation with changing government administrations. This political lens, he explained, makes it difficult for businesses to openly engage with or benefit from government initiatives, regardless of their merit or potential.
