Ghanaian Employers Urged to Embrace AI for Enhanced Workplace Safety

Accra, Ghana – Employers across Ghana are being strongly encouraged to adopt modern technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to significantly improve workplace safety conditions and mitigate accidents that can lead to costly operational disruptions. This call to action comes in the wake of the annual World Health and Safety Conference held recently in Accra, where industry leaders emphasized the critical role of technology in safeguarding employees.

The World Health and Safety Conference, organized by the Health Safety Environment and Quality Practitioners Association of Ghana (HSEQPA-GH), serves as a crucial platform for assessing and advancing health and safety practices across various sectors of the Ghanaian economy. This year’s event convened practitioners from all industries, highlighting a collective commitment to enhancing safety standards.

Ahmed Dasaana Natogma, Head of Operations at the Chamber of Mines, underscored the importance of employee safety, particularly within the mining sector, where workers are central to operational success. He stressed that while regulatory compliance is essential, companies should proactively invest in advanced safety measures.

AI as a Safety Game-Changer

Natogma specifically pointed to artificial intelligence as a key innovation that can modernize safety protocols. “This is the time to improve upon safety,” he stated, urging mining sector members to go beyond regulations. “We’re urging them to do more by using technology including artificial intelligence for safety practice.”

The rationale behind this push for technological integration is clear: workplace accidents, no matter how minor, can bring operations to a complete standstill. “When there is a little accident at the workplace, everything comes to a halt, and that will become an impact on your operations,” Natogma explained. He believes that embracing AI and other innovations is essential for maximizing operational benefits and ensuring a secure working environment.

Akua Berantuo Armooh, President of HSEQPA-GH, outlined the association’s forward-looking agenda, which extends beyond traditional physical safety. “We will not only focus on physical safety but pay particular attention to psycho, social and mental health as it affects employees at the work place,” she announced.

This holistic approach recognizes that employee well-being encompasses mental and emotional health, which are integral to overall safety and productivity. Armooh called upon business owners to demonstrate a clear duty of care towards their employees’ health and safety.

Armooh also highlighted the need for supportive regulatory frameworks. “We also need our regulators to come up with legislations and policies that will guide businesses to pay attention to employees’ health and safety,” she urged.
