Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has clarified reports surrounding the evacuation of Ghanaian citizens from South Africa, assuring that all individuals wishing to return will be accommodated. The statement on Thursday, May 22, addressed concerns following a specific incident at O.R. Tambo International Airport and confirmed ongoing efforts to facilitate a comprehensive repatriation exercise.
Context of Evacuation Efforts
The Ghanaian government has been coordinating an effort to evacuate approximately 800 of its citizens from South Africa. This initiative follows a period of heightened concern and logistical challenges that have affected the planned departure of these individuals.
Addressing Specific Incidents and Misinformation
Minister Ablakwa specifically addressed the case of Sylvester Boakye, a Ghanaian national who reportedly missed an updated evacuation notice and appeared at O.R. Tambo International Airport alone on Wednesday, May 21. The Minister commended Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, for locating Mr. Boakye.
Contrary to earlier reports, Mr. Ablakwa refuted claims that Mr. Boakye had already been flown back to Ghana, labeling these assertions as false. He stressed that Mr. Boakye would be included in the broader evacuation plans, reinforcing the government’s commitment.
Clarification on Flight Arrangements
The Ministry also clarified that no chartered flight had been dispatched by the Government of Ghana for this specific evacuation. The process has been temporarily deferred.
This deferral, according to the Minister, is to allow for the resolution of legal, technical, and logistical issues in collaboration with South African authorities. The aim is to ensure a smooth and coordinated operation for all involved.
Government’s Commitment to Citizens
Minister Ablakwa reiterated the government’s unwavering stance:
