Ghanaian Government Rules Out Mass Fan Funding for 2026 World Cup

Accra, Ghana – President John Mahama announced on May 31 that the Ghanaian government will not subsidize large-scale fan travel to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing prohibitive costs that make the initiative financially unviable for the state. The decision, communicated during a diaspora town hall meeting, prioritizes fiscal responsibility over public funding for supporter excursions.

Fiscal Prudence Guides Decision

President Mahama emphasized his administration’s commitment to prudent financial management. He stated that the estimated cost of approximately $11,000 per supporter for transportation, accommodation, feeding, and match tickets is too substantial to justify using public funds.
