Lawyer and lecturer at the Ghana School of Law, Bobby Banson, has stated that Ghana’s banking sector clean-up, which occurred between 2017 and 2019, could have been managed with less severe consequences for jobs, businesses, and customers. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, May 23, Mr. Banson commented on the recent restoration of GN Savings and Loans’ licence by the Court of Appeal, suggesting that while intervention was necessary, alternative strategies might have yielded better outcomes.
Context of the Banking Sector Reforms
The banking sector clean-up, spearheaded by the Bank of Ghana, led to the revocation of licenses for numerous financial institutions, including banks, savings and loans companies, and microfinance firms. This action was attributed to issues of insolvency and breaches of regulatory requirements.
