Ghanaian Nationals Warned of Stricter Visa Overstay Penalties in Ethiopia

Accra, Ghana – May 1, 2026 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana has issued a stern public advisory, cautioning Ghanaian citizens traveling to or residing in Ethiopia about significant penalties for visa overstays under the country’s revised immigration laws. The announcement follows official communication from Ethiopian authorities regarding stricter enforcement measures, effective immediately.

Ethiopian Immigration Law Update

Ethiopian authorities, through the Immigration and Citizenship Services, have begun enforcing stricter measures under the Immigration Amendment Regulation No. 559/2024, which was introduced in October 2024. This updated regulation introduces substantial financial penalties for individuals found to have overstayed their authorized visa duration.

The new penalties are tiered based on the length of the overstay. Travelers who exceed their authorized stay by less than three years will face a one-time fine of $3,000. This is in addition to a daily surcharge of $30 that will accrue for each day of unauthorized stay.

For individuals whose overstay extends beyond three years, the penalties escalate. They will be required to pay a higher one-time fine of $5,000, also coupled with the daily surcharge of $30.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the severe consequences of failing to adhere to these new regulations. A critical warning issued is that any failure or refusal to pay the stipulated penalties could lead to the confiscation and subsequent sale of a traveler’s personal belongings. This measure is intended to recover the outstanding penalty amounts.

This strict enforcement aims to ensure compliance with Ethiopia’s immigration policies and deter visa overstays among foreign nationals.

Government Advisory and Support

In light of these developments, the Ghanaian government is urging all its nationals currently in Ethiopia or planning to travel there to strictly comply with Ethiopian immigration laws. The advisory explicitly encourages citizens to avoid exceeding their permitted duration of stay to prevent incurring these heavy penalties.

Ghanaian citizens already residing in Ethiopia have also been advised to remain vigilant and mindful of the local regulations. The Ghana Embassy in Addis Ababa stands ready to provide necessary assistance to citizens who may encounter difficulties or require guidance on navigating these immigration requirements.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and protecting the interests of Ghanaian citizens abroad. However, it stressed the importance of responsible travel and full adherence to the laws of host countries. This proactive advisory serves to inform and protect Ghanaian nationals from potential legal and financial repercussions.

Implications for Travelers

The updated Ethiopian immigration regulations signal a broader trend of increased scrutiny and enforcement of visa rules across many African nations. For Ghanaian travelers, this means meticulous planning of trip durations and diligent monitoring of visa expiry dates is paramount. The substantial financial penalties underscore the need for strict compliance to avoid significant economic hardship and potential loss of personal assets.

The Ghana Embassy’s role becomes crucial for those facing challenges, offering a vital support link. Travelers should proactively seek clarification or assistance from the embassy well before any visa expiration dates to ensure a smooth and compliant stay in Ethiopia. This situation highlights the importance for all international travelers to stay informed about the immigration laws of their destination countries, as regulations can change and enforcement can become more rigorous.
