Ghanaian President Elevates TVET, Pledges Major Investment in Technical Education

President John Dramani Mahama declared that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) should be recognized as a primary driver of Ghana’s national development, not a secondary educational pathway. He made these remarks during the opening of the 4th Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities in Ghana, held in Effia, Western Region.

Context: Shifting Educational Paradigms

For years, TVET in many developing nations has been perceived as an option for students who do not excel in traditional academic streams. This perception often relegates these vital programs to a lower status, despite their crucial role in equipping individuals with practical skills essential for industry and economic growth. Ghana’s polytechnics were converted into Technical Universities a decade ago as a strategic move to bolster the nation’s industrialization efforts.
