A young Ghanaian man, who alleges he was recruited by the Russian military to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war, has returned to Ghana injured and with no money, despite receiving significant payments during his service. The recruit, whose identity is being protected for safety reasons, detailed his experiences in a JoyNews documentary, describing a journey that began with financial promises and ended with physical harm and financial ruin.
Recruitment and Initial Payments
The Ghanaian national claims he was coerced into signing a military contract with Russian forces. Upon enlistment, he reportedly received an initial payment of $30,000.
While deployed in the conflict zone, he stated that he received a monthly salary of approximately $3,000. This compensation was intended to be a significant incentive for his participation in the war.
Combat Injuries and Further Compensation
During his time on the battlefield, the recruit sustained injuries. Following these injuries, he was reportedly given an additional $40,000 in compensation by the Russian military.
Despite these substantial payments, the recruit’s financial situation took a turn for the worse upon his attempt to return home. He alleges he was deceived by another Ghanaian individual he encountered in Moscow.
Deception and Financial Loss
This acquaintance allegedly promised to assist him in returning to Ghana safely. However, the recruit claims this was a fraudulent arrangement.
