Ghanaian Youth Confront Addiction Crisis Through Evocative Dance Theatre

Accra, Ghana – A powerful contemporary dance theatre production titled Addiction, staged by the Vivies Dance and Theatre Academy, has ignited a national conversation about the escalating crisis of addiction among Ghanaian youth. The performance, which has garnered significant attention on the nation’s creative arts scene, saw over 2,000 patrons attend its two premieres, highlighting a widespread concern for the issue.

Challenging Conventional Notions of Addiction

The production Addiction deliberately broadens the definition of dependency, moving beyond traditional associations with drugs and alcohol. Through a compelling fusion of dance, music, and narrative, the performance delves into contemporary struggles that ensnare young people. These include the pervasive influence of social media, the allure of gambling, the complexities of toxic relationships, the pressures of peer influence, obsessions with fashion, sexual dependencies, the pursuit of power, and the reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Organized by the academy’s senior dance ensemble in collaboration with DLP, and supported by the Creative Arts Agency and Unichem, the production employed deeply emotional theatrical expression. Its aim was to expose the underlying pain, isolation, and societal pressures that often fuel destructive behaviors among the youth.

Personal Inspiration and a Call to Action

Vivian Boateng, CEO of Vivies Dance and Theatre Academy, revealed that her personal experience served as the primary inspiration for the production.
