Ghana’s broadcasting sector has dramatically evolved from a state-controlled system to one of West Africa’s most diverse and competitive media landscapes, a transformation driven by liberalization and regulatory reform. This significant shift was highlighted by Abdulai Awudu, General Manager of Akan Brands at the Multimedia Group and President of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), during the Industry Stakeholder Forum commemorating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2026.
From State Control to Liberalisation
The journey began with the 1992 Constitution, which enshrined media freedom and created the legal framework for private entities to enter the broadcasting arena. Prior to this, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation held a near-monopoly, offering limited editorial variety and tightly controlling access to the airwaves.
