Accra, Ghana – May 20, 2026 – Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, definitively stated before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) today that the recently circulated aircraft branded ‘Air Ghana Cargo’ is a private enterprise and not associated with government operations. The clarification addressed public speculation fueled by viral images of the cargo plane.
Dispelling Ownership Rumors
The Minister’s remarks came in response to a query from Deputy Ranking Member Davis Opoku Ansah, who sought official confirmation regarding the aircraft’s status. Mr. Nikpe stressed that Air Ghana is an independent, privately funded cargo transport company, with no equity or operational control held by the state.
This distinction is crucial as Ghana contemplates re-establishing a national airline, a venture fraught with historical challenges. The government aims to avoid past pitfalls that led to the demise of the former national carrier, Ghana Airways.
Lessons from Ghana Airways’ Past
The discussion inevitably turned to the legacy of Ghana Airways. Ranking Member Samuel Atta Mills recalled the airline’s persistent issues with chronic delays and scheduling collapses, which significantly deterred passengers, especially business travelers reliant on timely connections.
Minister Nikpe acknowledged these past operational failures, admitting they had damaged Ghana’s reputation. He stated that the government has learned critical lessons from previous aviation ventures.
