The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has declared full support for the striking doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), labeling the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer as “without basis.” The association issued a three-day ultimatum on Saturday, June 6, 2026, demanding the government reverse the decision and reinstate the CEO.
GMA’s Stance on CEO Suspension
Following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, the GMA stated its unequivocal backing for the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA)’s decision to cease services. This action is in direct protest of the CEO’s suspension.
The GMA also criticized the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for what it described as inciting public sentiment against healthcare professionals.
Defense of KATH Management’s Actions
The association strongly defended the KATH management’s handling of a situation that led to the CEO’s suspension. They characterized the management’s decision as a “right and proper professional and administrative decision in line with best practice in patient safety and responsible healthcare leadership across the world.”
Specifically, the GMA clarified that the temporary halt on new emergency admissions and redirection of patients to nearby facilities did not abandon patients. Instead, these actions ensured patients received “safe and timely care at nearby hospitals with support from specialists from KATH.”
This coordinated response, involving the Regional Health Directorate, Regional Coordinating Council, and various health facilities and workers, successfully decongested the Accident & Emergency Centre. Consequently, new admissions to the KATH Emergency Department resumed within 24 hours.
GMA’s Formal Demands
The GMA’s NEC concluded that the initial query and subsequent suspension directive were “without basis and ought not to have been occasioned.” The association is now formally demanding the immediate withdrawal of the directive to the KATH Board to suspend the CEO.
Furthermore, the GMA demands the CEO’s immediate reinstatement within three working days. The association confirmed its full support for KADA’s ongoing strike, which will continue until the suspension is rescinded and measures are implemented to enhance emergency capacity in the Kumasi region.
