Google Tries Again: New Smart Glasses Aim for All-Day AI Assistance

Google announced Tuesday at its annual developer conference in Mountain View, California, that it will release new smart glasses this autumn, marking a significant return to wearable augmented reality over a decade after the initial failure of Google Glass. The upcoming eyewear features a small camera and speakers integrated into the frames and arms, designed to facilitate private, spoken interactions with Google’s AI, Gemini, and aims to keep users hands-free and heads-up.

A Second Attempt at Wearable Tech

The new smart glasses, revealed for the first time at the conference, will be available in styles designed in collaboration with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. This second venture into smart glasses comes more than ten years after Google Glass, which launched in 2013 and was discontinued in 2015 due to significant backlash regarding its high price and privacy concerns, particularly around its front-facing camera.
