Government Pivots Agenda 111 to Prioritize 35 Near-Completion Hospitals, Seeks Faith-Based Partnerships

President John Mahama announced Friday that the government will concentrate on completing 35 of the 111 hospitals initiated under the Agenda 111 program this year. This strategic shift aims to revitalize the stalled health infrastructure initiative, with the government also seeking support from faith-based organizations to help finish and operate some facilities.

Context: The Ambitious, Stalled Agenda 111

The Agenda 111 project, launched as a flagship health infrastructure expansion, envisioned building 111 hospitals across the nation. The program aimed to significantly improve healthcare access and quality by constructing new facilities and upgrading existing ones.

However, the initiative has encountered significant challenges since its inception. Many projects remain in early construction phases, with some even stalled after contractors received mobilization payments but failed to commence or continue work. This has led to widespread criticism regarding project execution and financial management.

Phased Approach and Focus on Completion

Speaking at Jubilee House during a meeting with the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, President Mahama acknowledged the initial approach of starting all 111 projects simultaneously was not ideal. He suggested a phased rollout would have allowed for better resource allocation and more efficient project management.
