The Board of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) met with Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, in Accra on an unspecified date in late 2025. This engagement aimed to bolster collaboration on Ghana’s energy infrastructure and discuss ongoing operational challenges and future investment needs. The meeting followed the board’s inauguration in August 2025 and is part of a broader stakeholder outreach initiative.
Context: Powering Ghana’s Growth
Ghana’s energy sector is critical for its economic stability and industrial ambitions. GRIDCo, as the entity responsible for the transmission of electricity, plays a pivotal role in ensuring a reliable power supply across the nation. Recent events, including a significant fire incident at Akosombo, have underscored the vulnerability of existing infrastructure and the urgent need for enhanced resilience and investment. The country’s drive towards industrialization necessitates a robust and stable energy grid to attract investment and sustain economic activity.
GRIDCo’s Operational Updates and Challenges
During the meeting, GRIDCo’s Chief Executive, Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, provided an update on the restoration efforts following the Akosombo fire incident. He also revealed plans to establish a new, state-of-the-art control room designed to bolster the company’s operational resilience against future disruptions.
Ing. Otchere highlighted significant operational challenges impacting GRIDCo’s infrastructure. These include the detrimental effects of illegal chainsaw operations and illegal mining activities, which pose a direct threat to the integrity of the electricity transmission network.
