Tension has gripped Gwira Ampansie in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region after suspected armed men linked to illegal mining activities allegedly shot and killed Mensah Ango, the biological brother of the community’s chief, Nana Kojo Mensah. The incident occurred when Ango was sent to invite leaders of a mining company, identified as PRP, to the chief’s palace to discuss concerns over alleged illegal operations on community land.
Escalating Conflict Over Illegal Mining
The alleged perpetrators are reportedly armed men hired to secure an illegal mining site operated by PRP. Residents claim these individuals have been firing indiscriminately to intimidate those who oppose their activities. The deceased, Mensah Ango, a 46-year-old father of 11 and husband to three wives, was reportedly dispatched by the chief alongside some linguists.
During the attempted dialogue, the armed men allegedly opened fire on Ango, leading to his death. This tragic event has ignited anger among the youth in Gwira Ampansie, who are reportedly threatening to retaliate by destroying mining equipment and properties belonging to the illegal miners.
History of Violence and Accusations of Official Complicity
Residents further allege a disturbing pattern of violence, claiming that these armed men have previously killed approximately three other individuals who openly opposed the illegal mining operations. The community points fingers at state authorities, particularly the District Chief Executive (DCE), for failing to act despite numerous complaints lodged against the mining company and the violent conduct of its security detail.
Chief Nana Kojo Mensah expressed profound concern over the deteriorating security situation. He accused some state officials of implicitly supporting the illegal miners, which he believes hinders the community’s pursuit of justice. Life has become unbearable for the residents, many of whom are poor and feel powerless to have their grievances addressed by authorities.
Call for Government Intervention
In light of the repeated attacks and killings, Nana Kojo Mensah is urgently calling on the government, specifically the President and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), to intervene. He demands the immediate expulsion of the PRP mining company from the community to restore peace and safety.
Further investigations suggest a connection between the controversial mining site and a Canadian national known only as Simon, who is allegedly an advisor to a Ghanaian minister. Community sources claim Simon owns the site where Major Mahama was reportedly killed during previous disturbances in the Nzema area, though these allegations remain unconfirmed by official channels.
The chief contends that the continuous inaction by authorities has emboldened the illegal miners, allowing them to operate with impunity and leaving residents in a state of constant fear. He implores for immediate intervention to re-establish security.
Official Response and Arrests
Responding to the incident, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Nzema East Municipal Assembly, Herbert Kuah Dickson, stated that he was informed and promptly directed the police to investigate. The MCE confirmed that six individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting, including three foreign nationals.
Mr. Kuah Dickson assured the community that the Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies, is committed to taking the necessary measures to maintain law, order, and peace in Gwira Ampansie.
Looking Ahead
The immediate focus will be on the ongoing police investigation and the prosecution of those arrested. Residents and community leaders will be closely watching whether the government’s intervention will effectively dismantle the illegal mining operations and hold those responsible for the violence accountable. The community’s ability to regain a sense of security will depend on sustained action against illegal mining and the protection of its citizens from armed groups associated with these activities.
