Nurses and midwives at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have announced their intention to join the ongoing strike by doctors, commencing Sunday, June 7, unless the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, is rescinded. The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), KATH branch, declared their solidarity with the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), deeming the CEO’s suspension an ineffective measure for resolving the hospital’s persistent issues.
Background of the Dispute
The doctors initiated their industrial action a day prior to the nurses’ warning, protesting a suspension directive issued by the Minister of Health. This directive followed a temporary redirection of new emergency admissions by KATH management due to severe congestion at the Accident and Emergency Centre.
Nurses’ Stance on Patient Safety
The GRNMA emphasized that KATH management’s decision to redirect admissions was a critical step to protect patient safety and ensure the delivery of quality healthcare. They argued that suspending the CEO would not address the deep-seated structural and logistical challenges plaguing the hospital.
“Health professionals are working under extremely difficult conditions and changing this narrative cannot be achieved with the suspension of the CEO,” the GRNMA stated in a notice to the KATH Board Chairman. The association highlighted that KATH continues to receive a high volume of referrals from multiple regions nationwide.
Infrastructure and Logistical Challenges
Despite the constant influx of patients, the hospital’s infrastructure, equipment, and logistics have not kept pace with the escalating healthcare demands. This disparity creates an environment where healthcare professionals are forced to operate under strenuous conditions.
Calls for Ministry Intervention
The GRNMA urged the Ministry of Health to take concrete steps to alleviate the pressure on KATH. This includes expediting the operationalization of planned health facilities designed to reduce referrals to KATH. Furthermore, they called for a prioritization of retooling and expanding both KATH and its associated referral facilities.
Adequate resources are essential for KATH to effectively function as a leading tertiary healthcare institution, the association stressed. They also demanded that the CEO be empowered to execute his responsibilities without hindrance, particularly in safeguarding both patients and healthcare workers, especially those in the emergency department.
Implications for Healthcare Services
The GRNMA issued a stern warning: if the suspension of Dr. Baidoo remains in effect by 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, nurses and midwives will join the strike. This collective action by two major healthcare professional groups could cripple services at one of the nation’s premier teaching hospitals.
“We hope that the Board of KATH will take the necessary steps to ensure peace and harmony in the hospital and avert any wide-scale industrial action that will gravely affect the delivery of health services in the hospital,” the GRNMA concluded. Both the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and KADA have previously supported the management’s decision, underscoring its necessity for patient well-being.
Looking Ahead
The situation at KATH highlights a critical juncture for healthcare management and the Ministry of Health. The coming days will reveal whether a resolution can be found that addresses the nurses’ and doctors’ concerns regarding patient safety and hospital infrastructure, or if the industrial action will escalate, significantly impacting healthcare delivery in the region.
