KIVO Supports May 9 Foundation Marking 25th Anniversary of Accra Stadium Disaster

KIVO, a producer of consumer goods, has donated to the May 9 Foundation to aid families affected by the tragic 2001 Accra Sports Stadium disaster and other vulnerable individuals. The donation coincides with the 25th anniversary of the stampede, which occurred during a football match between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak SC and Asante Kotoko SC. The disaster tragically claimed over 126 lives and injured many, leaving numerous families in distress.

Remembering Africa’s Worst Sports Tragedy

The May 9, 2001, Accra stadium disaster remains the deadliest sports-related incident in African history. The stampede erupted in the final minutes of a fiercely contested match, leading to chaos and a devastating loss of life.

Despite the government establishing a disaster fund, many victims and their relatives report receiving minimal support over the years. The lack of accountability has also been a persistent concern, as the subsequent investigation did not assign direct responsibility to any individual for the tragedy.

The May 9 Foundation’s Enduring Mission

In the wake of the disaster, former Asante Kotoko Chairman Herbert Mensah took personal initiative to support victims and vulnerable populations through the establishment of the May 9 Foundation. The foundation has since evolved into a significant humanitarian force.

Over the past two and a half decades, the May 9 Foundation has undertaken a wide range of charitable projects. These include providing life-saving surgeries for children with hole-in-heart disease, offering aid to victims of gas explosions and floods, assisting individuals with physical challenges, and supporting the educational needs of underprivileged families.

KIVO’s Corporate Social Responsibility

KIVO’s contribution to the May 9 Foundation is framed as part of its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility. By partnering with the foundation, KIVO aims to extend its support to those impacted by the stadium disaster and other societal needs.

A Lifesaving Partnership for Children’s Heart Health

A notable initiative supported by the May 9 Foundation is the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation. Established by Chinese investor Y.C. Shen, founder of SUNDA and KEDA International Group, this partnership focuses on providing critical medical care for children suffering from hole-in-heart conditions.

The foundation is named in honor of Shen Yang, a 17-year-old survivor of a hole-in-heart condition, and his brother, Shen Yuet. This collaboration has already made a significant impact.

According to Herbert Mensah, who also serves as Secretary for the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation, 117 children have successfully undergone corrective surgeries at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital through this initiative. Each surgery incurs costs ranging from $6,000 to $14,000, with all medical expenses fully covered by the foundation.

Mensah outlined ambitious plans, stating, “As Secretary of the foundation, I can say that we intend to undertake between 20 and 30 surgeries every year for the next 10 years.” This long-term commitment represents an estimated investment of nearly $2 million over the next decade.

“We are changing lives and taking pressure off the shoulders of many families. This is an extraordinary initiative for the benefit of Ghanaian families,” Mensah emphasized, highlighting the profound positive impact on numerous households.

Broader Support Network

Mensah also extended his gratitude to a network of sponsors and partners whose support is crucial for the foundation’s humanitarian activities. These include Interplast, Sunda International, Softcare Sanitary Pad, GBfoods, Melcom Group, and the Kesben Group.

Several media organizations, such as Hello FM, Peace FM, OTEC FM, Angel FM, Sika FM, and Time FM, have also been instrumental in raising awareness and supporting the foundation’s cause. Mensah noted that these sponsors share the May 9 Foundation’s dedication to assisting disaster victims and vulnerable groups across Ghana.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Support and Seeking Justice

The ongoing support from organizations like KIVO and the sustained efforts of the May 9 Foundation, particularly through life-changing medical interventions, underscore a commitment to healing and community support. As the foundation continues its work, the focus remains on providing tangible assistance to those affected by past tragedies and preventing future suffering. The long-term vision for the children’s heart initiative promises continued impact for years to come, while the broader community hopes for continued progress in addressing the lingering needs of the May 9 disaster survivors and their families.
