Lawra Assembly Tackles Infrastructure, Security, and Revenue Shortfalls

The Lawra Municipal Assembly is launching a multi-pronged initiative to address critical infrastructure deficiencies, enhance public safety through improved street lighting, and significantly boost internally generated revenue. These strategic decisions were finalized at an Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, and officially presented by Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Cecilia Soyelle Nuratu during the Assembly’s first ordinary meeting of its third session.

Urgent Infrastructure Repairs and Security Enhancements

A primary concern highlighted was the dilapidated state of the District Police Headquarters’ roof. The Assembly has deemed the necessary repair works urgent to prevent further structural damage and ensure the facility’s operational integrity. This addresses a pressing need for adequate security infrastructure.

In parallel, the Assembly plans to upgrade street lighting along the Nandom Road. This initiative includes re-awarding an electrification contract that will cover the Municipal Fire Station, Lawra NTC, and sections of Nandom Road. The goal is to improve visibility and enhance security for residents and students, particularly those commuting after dark.

Boosting Agricultural Productivity and Farmer Support

The agricultural sector is set to receive a boost with plans to establish a dedicated agricultural learning centre. This facility aims to provide farmers with practical training, ultimately contributing to improved crop yields and more sustainable farming practices within the municipality.

Intensified Revenue Mobilization Efforts

To bolster its financial resources, the Assembly is intensifying efforts to ensure businesses comply with permit and registration requirements. A newly directed Revenue Task Force will conduct inspections of business premises to verify compliance and collect outstanding payments before operations commence.

Presenting the latest revenue figures, MCE Nuratu expressed significant concern regarding collection rates. The Lawra Urban Council reported zero revenue, while the Babile Zonal Council collected GH¢8,987, Eremon Zonal Council GH¢750, and Zambo Area Council GH¢583. The Revenue Task Force contributed GH¢23,435, and the Treasury mobilized GH¢75,940.

The municipality has set an internally generated fund target of GH¢350,000 for the current year. However, collections have only reached just over 31 percent of this target so far. MCE Nuratu urged urban and zonal councils to significantly improve their revenue collection performance.

“The conveners are hereby reminded to step up their game to improve collections from their respective areas,” she stated, emphasizing the need for greater accountability and efficiency at the local level.

District Assemblies Common Fund Projects Nearing Completion

The Assembly also provided an update on development projects funded by the fourth quarter 2025 release of the District Assemblies Common Fund. Several key projects are nearing completion, indicating progress in infrastructure development.

Specifically, two boreholes equipped with water towers and 250-litre tanks at the Assembly Block and the Lawra Urban Clinic are approximately 90 percent complete. Furthermore, 19 new boreholes with hand pumps have been successfully installed in various communities, including Bagre Zambo, Kokore, Tangzu, Lesa, Bazin, Brifohmaaliba, Bo Eremon, Yegetuuri, Dazuugri, and Metorguori Tonga. An additional 19 existing boreholes have undergone rehabilitation and are now operational.

In the education sector, a three-unit classroom block at Eremon Naayiribo is 80 percent complete, while a two-unit kindergarten block with ancillary facilities at Bifobaltan has reached 40 percent completion. Rehabilitation work on the Finance Officer’s bungalow is nearing completion.

Ongoing projects also include renovations to the offices of the Municipal Chief Executive, the Coordinating Director, the Presiding Member, and the MCE’s residence. A three-unit vocational school block in Bo is also undergoing rehabilitation.

MCE Nuratu assured the Assembly that contractors are under close supervision to ensure projects are completed on time and meet required quality standards. The successful implementation of these projects and revenue enhancement measures will be critical for the Lawra Municipality’s development trajectory.
