Nairobi, Kenya – Former President John Mahama urged African leaders to transition from discussions to concrete actions in building robust health systems across the continent during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi on May 13. He highlighted that escalating debt burdens are significantly hindering crucial investments in healthcare, education, and agriculture, thereby jeopardizing the goal of achieving “health sovereignty” for African nations.
Debt Burden Threatens Health Sovereignty
In a statement released via Facebook, President Mahama articulated his concerns, emphasizing that a substantial portion of national revenues being allocated to debt servicing leaves insufficient resources for critical development sectors. He pointed out that when a country dedicates as much as 50 percent of its revenue to debt repayment, its capacity to invest in essential areas like health, education, and agriculture is severely compromised.
The ‘Accra Reset’ Initiative
Mahama introduced the “Accra Reset” as a strategic framework designed to foster a unified African approach aimed at achieving tangible progress for the continent’s citizens. This initiative seeks to enable African countries to collaborate effectively in addressing the structural impediments that affect development and the resilience of public health infrastructure.
