The Ghana Police Service has arrested 50 suspects following a significant anti-narcotics operation conducted on Thursday, May 7, 2026, within the Madina Market enclave in the Greater Accra Region. The operation, spearheaded by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, targeted individuals suspected of involvement in the supply and distribution of illicit drugs, based on gathered intelligence.

Intelligence-Led Operation Uncovers Drug Network

Commissioner of Police (COP) Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe announced the successful raid on Friday, May 8, detailing that the operation was specifically designed to disrupt suspected drug-related activities. The suspects apprehended comprise 46 men and four women, indicating a diverse involvement in the alleged criminal enterprise.

Preliminary screening revealed that the arrested individuals represent multiple nationalities. Out of the 50 suspects, 25 are Ghanaian citizens. The remaining 25 include 13 Nigerians, nine Nigeriens, one Malian, one Togolese, and one Burkinabe national, highlighting a cross-border dimension to the drug trade in the area.

Key Figures and Suspected Distributors Identified

During the operation, police investigators identified several individuals as pivotal to the alleged criminal network. Among them, Abigail Okoh, 26, and Mohammed Zaya, a Nigerien national, were specifically named as kingpins within the operation. Their alleged roles suggest they were central figures in managing and directing the drug distribution.

Further investigation pointed to two other Nigerien nationals, Yussif Abubakar, 25, and Amadou Alfani, 43, as shop owners allegedly involved in the direct sale and distribution of narcotic substances from their business premises within the market.

Significant Seizure of Narcotics and Related Items

The raid resulted in the confiscation of substantial quantities of suspected narcotics and related paraphernalia. Police recovered 230 boxes of Tramadol, estimated to be worth GH₵130,000, and 49 boxes of other suspected drugs valued at GH₵26,000.

Additionally, 10 parcels of Indian hemp, with an estimated street value of GH₵15,000, were seized, along with 13 additional boxes of unidentified narcotic substances. The total street value of all exhibits recovered is approximately GH₵200,000. Other items seized include mobile phones, scissors, and knives, believed to be instruments used in the illegal trade.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Commitments

All 50 suspects and the seized exhibits have been transported to the National Operations Directorate Headquarters for comprehensive investigations and subsequent legal action. COP Teye-Cudjoe stated that the ongoing investigations aim to fully ascertain the extent of the drug network and identify all involved parties.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to combating drug-related crime across the nation. They announced plans to continue conducting targeted operations in markets, communities, and public spaces to dismantle drug supply chains and curb peddling activities.

COP Teye-Cudjoe commended the professionalism and dedication of the officers who participated in the operation. He also extended gratitude to the public for providing crucial intelligence that supports the police’s efforts in maintaining public safety and security.

Implications and Future Outlook

This large-scale operation signifies a determined effort by the Ghana Police Service to tackle the persistent issue of drug trafficking and distribution within key urban centers. The identification of alleged kingpins and business owners involved suggests a strategic approach to dismantling the organizational structure of drug networks.

The multi-national nature of the arrests underscores the need for regional cooperation in combating drug-related crimes. The success of this raid may encourage similar targeted operations in other market areas and public spaces across Ghana. The public’s role in providing intelligence is highlighted as a critical component for future successes, suggesting increased community engagement will be key.

Moving forward, authorities will likely focus on the prosecution of the arrested suspects and further intelligence gathering to uncover broader networks. The public should anticipate continued police presence and operations aimed at enhancing security and reducing the availability of illicit substances, particularly in bustling commercial hubs like Madina Market.
