Majority Chief Whip Demands Improved Performance from Special Prosecutor's Office

Accra, Ghana – Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor has issued a stern warning to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), indicating that the institution will face significant scrutiny if it does not demonstrate improved performance and tangible results, despite receiving substantial state resources and legal backing. The remarks came during a broadcast on PM Express on Tuesday, where the South Dayi Member of Parliament (MP) also expressed support for President John Mahama’s call for patience with the OSP, while emphasizing the urgent need for greater commitment and demonstrable achievements from the anti-corruption body.

Dafeamekpor’s statement signifies a shift in public discourse surrounding the OSP’s efficacy. While acknowledging the President’s counsel to allow the OSP more time to refine its operations, the Chief Whip made it clear that this patience is conditional. He stated his belief in the President’s judgment but underscored that the OSP must now translate this afforded time into concrete action and visible progress in its mandate to combat corruption.

Call for National Expansion of OSP Operations

A central point of Dafeamekpor’s critique revolves around the OSP’s operational footprint. He argued that the office’s current concentration within Accra hinders its ability to effectively tackle corruption and public sector abuse nationwide.

The OSP Act explicitly mandates the establishment of regional offices, a provision the Majority Chief Whip believes has not been adequately utilized. He stressed that corruption is not confined to the capital but is a pervasive issue across all regions of Ghana, often occurring at the district assembly level and within various state institutions.
