Makola Traders Protest Eviction, Seek Government Reconsideration on Redevelopment Plans

Accra, Ghana – The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, visited traders at the 31st December Makola Market on [Insert Date, e.g., Tuesday] following a protest against what they term a forceful eviction from sections of the market. The traders are urging the government to pause and reconsider plans for demolishing parts of the market for redevelopment, citing potential severe impacts on their livelihoods without adequate consultation or alternative arrangements.

The traders’ protest stemmed from fears that the planned redevelopment of the Makola Market would lead to their displacement. They argue that the current process lacks sufficient communication and clear plans for relocation, jeopardizing the businesses that many have operated for decades.

During the Minister’s visit, traders expressed their deep reliance on the market, with some stating they have been engaged in trade there for 30 to 40 years. This long-term presence underscores the critical nature of the market to their economic survival and that of their families.
