Headmen and queen mothers from the Bunkpurugu/Nakpanduri and Yunyoo/Nansuan districts convened in Binde on Saturday for a pivotal peace-building meeting. The gathering aimed to foster unity and stability across the Mamprugu Kingdom, addressing recurring conflicts and charting a course for sustainable development.
Context of Conflict and Development
The Mamprugu Kingdom, a region historically rich in culture, has been marred by persistent inter-communal and intra-communal conflicts. These disputes have not only claimed lives but have also significantly hampered the area’s socio-economic progress. The region consistently ranks among the poorest in Ghana, a situation exacerbated by the diversion of limited resources towards security operations instead of development initiatives.
A significant concern highlighted during the meeting was the prevalence of sophisticated weapons within communities. Lawyer Sulley Sambian, an aspiring NPP Regional Chairman, lamented that the district has become “richer in sophisticated weapons used to destroy lives instead of investing in development, education, and opportunities for the people.” This stark reality underscores the urgent need for effective peacebuilding measures.
