The family of Nteja Ibotul, a 33-year-old man who was allegedly beaten to death on April 15, 2026, in Tengelento-Buradeni, Kpandai District, Northern Region, is urging police to expedite their investigation and bring those responsible to justice. Ibotul was reportedly accused of witchcraft and spiritually causing the death of an elder in the community.
Community Tensions Escalate After Accusation
Tensions reportedly flared during funeral rites for an elderly community member when a soothsayer pointed to Ibotul as the cause of the death. This accusation forced Ibotul to flee his home, fearing for his safety.
While attempting to leave the community, Ibotul was allegedly ambushed by unknown assailants. He sustained severe head injuries and was left by the roadside. He was transported to the Kpandai District Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.
Initial Reports and Family Frustration
The Assembly Member for the area, Joshua, initially received reports suggesting the death was a road accident. Upon reaching the scene, however, it became apparent that Ibotul had been a victim of an assault.
Nearly two weeks after the incident, Ibotul’s family expressed deep frustration over what they perceive as a lack of progress from the police. They fear the case might be neglected if swift action is not taken.
Police Cite Cooperation Issues in Investigation
Conversely, the police stated that the family’s cooperation has been a significant impediment to a swift investigation. Specifically, challenges in arranging a post-mortem examination and delays in identifying suspects named in family statements have hampered progress.
Police officials emphasized their commitment to making arrests but stressed the necessity of proper suspect identification and the establishment of sufficient evidence for prosecution, ruling out hasty actions.
Authorities Condemn the Act, Call for Information
The District Chief Executive for Kpandai and chair of the District Security Council (DISEC), Haruna Abdul-Karim, strongly condemned the incident. He unequivocally stated that the act was a criminal offense, amounting to murder under Ghanaian law.
Mr. Abdul-Karim urged the police to intensify their investigation and appealed to community members to provide credible information that could aid the process. He also called on any individuals implicated in the incident to report to the police, assuring them of DISEC’s support for the police to carry out their duties impartially.
Implications and Future Concerns
This tragic event highlights the persistent issue of witchcraft accusations and the dangerous vigilantism that can result in remote communities. The family’s plea for justice underscores the need for effective law enforcement and community engagement to combat such practices.
The differing accounts from the family and the police regarding cooperation suggest underlying communication challenges or differing priorities. Moving forward, the focus will be on whether the police can overcome these hurdles to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
The case also raises questions about the role of traditional practices and beliefs in modern society and the potential for them to lead to violence. The commitment from the District Security Council to support the investigation offers a glimmer of hope for accountability.
The willingness of community members to volunteer information will be crucial in determining the outcome of the investigation. Observers will be watching closely to see if this incident leads to greater awareness and action against the harmful practice of witchcraft accusations in the region.
