The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, recently met with delegates from the May 9 Foundation and children who have benefited from life-saving heart surgeries, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the tragic May 9, 2001, Accra Sports Stadium disaster. The visit highlighted the foundation’s ongoing commitment to transforming a national tragedy into a beacon of hope for children with congenital heart conditions.
Commemorating a Tragedy, Fostering Hope
The May 9, 2001, disaster remains a somber chapter in Ghana’s history, claiming the lives of over 126 football fans during a match between Asante Kotoko SC and Accra Hearts of Oak SC. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, a date that carries deep emotional weight for many Ghanaians.
Herbert Mensah, President of the May 9 Foundation and Secretary to the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation, led a delegation to the Manhyia Palace. The delegation included children who have successfully undergone surgeries for hole-in-heart conditions at the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Transforming Lives Through Philanthropy
Over the past two years, the May 9 Foundation, in collaboration with the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation, has facilitated 117 successful surgeries for children suffering from hole-in-heart disease. This initiative directly addresses a critical need, as many families cannot afford the substantial cost of such medical interventions.
The cost per surgery ranges from $6,000 to $14,000, with the foundation covering all expenses. This financial support is crucial, as indicated by the foundation’s commitment to assisting numerous children in the coming years.
A Royal Seal of Approval
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a revered figure known for his philanthropic endeavors and Life Patron of Asante Kotoko SC, interacted warmly with the children. He commended Herbert Mensah for his dedication to preserving the memory of the May 9 victims while simultaneously creating a positive legacy through humanitarian work.
The Asantehene encouraged the foundation to continue its vital work, urging them to inspire other individuals and organizations to contribute to similar causes. His endorsement underscores the importance of the foundation’s mission in a nation striving to enhance healthcare accessibility.
Key Players in the Initiative
The delegation included Erica Amoako, Administrator of the Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation; Jacky Chan, Managing Director of SUNDA in the Ashanti Region; Rafatu Inusah, President of Ghana Rugby; and key coordinators King Edward, Joseph Chester Annie, and Sacut Amenga-Etego from the May 9 Foundation.
The Shen Yang and Shen Yuet Children’s Heart Foundation was established by Y.C. Shen, Chairman of the SUNDA International Group of Companies. Looking Ahead: Continued Impact and Awareness

As Ghana continues to commemorate the May 9 disaster, the May 9 Foundation’s work offers a tangible way to honor the past by safeguarding the future of its children. The foundation’s commitment to expanding its reach suggests that many more young lives will be positively impacted in the years to come, turning a day of national mourning into a symbol of enduring hope and collective action in healthcare.
