Medical Neglect Cited in Death of Engineer Charles Amissah, Sparking Healthcare System Scrutiny

Accra, Ghana – A three-member committee has concluded that 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah died from medical neglect, not the immediate injuries sustained in a February 6, 2026 hit-and-run incident near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Overpass. The finding intensifies concerns about the effectiveness and accessibility of emergency healthcare services in Ghana.

Context: A Race Against Time

Amissah, an engineer with Promasidor Ghana Limited, was struck in a hit-and-run accident. Following the incident, personnel from the National Ambulance Service attended to him. However, his subsequent attempts to access critical care at multiple major health facilities, including the Police Hospital, Ridge Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, were reportedly unsuccessful due to a lack of available beds.

Tragically, Amissah died while still in transit between facilities. This harrowing sequence of events ignited public outcry and prompted the swift establishment of an investigative committee to examine the systemic failures in the country’s emergency response protocols.

Findings of the Akosa Committee

Led by Chair Agyeman Badu Akosa, the three-member committee’s findings are based on autopsy and pathology reports. These reports indicate that Amissah could have survived had he received timely medical intervention.
