Accra, Ghana – April 28, 2026 – Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has highlighted his office’s sustained engagement and motivation strategies as a key factor behind the improved performance of Ghana’s national football teams, including the prominent Black Stars, in their recent World Cup qualification efforts.
A New Approach to Team Support
Speaking on the Ekosiisen program on Asempa FM, Minister Adams detailed a proactive approach that moved beyond traditional administrative duties. He emphasized a focus on direct interaction with players and technical staff across various national teams.
This engagement strategy was not confined to the men’s senior team, the Black Stars. Adams confirmed his office extended similar efforts to other national squads, notably the Black Queens, Ghana’s women’s national football team.
Unprecedented Minister Involvement
Adams revealed that his consistent presence at team training camps was a deliberate tactic to boost player morale. He shared that veteran members of the Black Queens had expressed that the level of ministerial involvement was unlike anything they had experienced before.
“Those who had been in the Black Queens team for some time told me that they had really not gone for any competition that the Minister showed a lot of interest in, as I did, visiting them even in the training camp,” Adams stated during the radio interview.
The Power of Motivation and Alignment
The Minister articulated that such direct engagement is crucial for motivating athletes and bridging the gap between public expectations and team realities. He believes that fostering a sense of appreciation for the players’ efforts is paramount.
“It’s a matter of motivation, let them know you appreciate what they are doing and let them also get the feedback from the people, and together you will find the middle level to meet each other,” he explained.
Adams stressed the importance of a two-way street: players understanding the national expectations placed upon them, while the public is encouraged to offer consistent support.
“You also have to let the team understand that this is the expectation of the people,” he added, underscoring the need for alignment between the team’s aspirations and the nation’s hopes.
Broader Implications for National Sports
This proactive ministerial engagement could signal a shift in how national sports teams are supported in Ghana. By focusing on motivational aspects and direct communication, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation aims to create a more cohesive and driven environment for athletes.
The success attributed to this approach with the Black Stars and Black Queens may set a precedent for other national sports disciplines. Future performance metrics will likely be analyzed not just on wins and losses, but also on the underlying support structures and player morale.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining Momentum
As Ghana looks towards future international competitions, the sustainability of this engagement model will be critical. Observers will watch to see if this hands-on approach becomes a permanent fixture in the Ministry’s strategy, and how it continues to impact the performance and spirit of all national sports teams.
