Accra, Ghana – The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has voiced strong criticism against the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, accusing him of orchestrating an excessive public relations campaign around the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa. The opposition argues that the focus on ceremonies and publicity overshadows the urgent need to assist the many citizens still stranded in the southern African nation.
Context of the Evacuations
The recent evacuations stem from an escalating security situation in South Africa, which has prompted many Ghanaian nationals residing there to seek repatriation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been coordinating these efforts, with the first flight carrying 297 evacuees arriving at Accra International Airport recently. A subsequent flight is anticipated in the coming days.
Minority’s Concerns Over ‘PR Spectacle’
Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, acknowledged the government’s role in facilitating the return of some Ghanaians. However, he contended that the fanfare accompanying the arrivals distracts from the core mission.
