Morocco is heading to the 2026 World Cup in North America with renewed ambition and an elevated squad pedigree, four years after their historic semi-final finish. The team, now among the world’s top 10 ranked sides, faces the challenge of meeting heightened expectations following their Qatar 2022 breakthrough.
In a move mirroring their 2022 campaign, Morocco has appointed a new head coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, who replaced Walid Regragui in March. This transition means the Atlas Lions have limited time to adapt to Ouahbi’s tactical approach.
Ouahbi, who led Morocco to an Under-20 World Cup title last year, has introduced a clear 4-2-3-1 formation that can shift to a 4-2-2-2. This setup aims to create space on the right flank for captain Achraf Hakimi.
The pressure on this Moroccan squad is immense. Having surpassed expectations in Qatar, they now enter the 2026 tournament as one of the top contenders.
