A Ghanaian mother has publicly accused her daughter’s father, a Police Inspector stationed in Garu, Upper East Region, of sexually abusing their 15-year-old daughter over several years. The alleged abuse, which began when the girl was around 10 years old, reportedly resulted in a pregnancy that was terminated at home and, more recently, an HIV diagnosis for the child. The mother made these allegations in an emotional interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem program, detailing a harrowing account of alleged abuse, cover-ups, and a slow-moving investigation.
Background of Allegations
According to the mother, the girl lived with her father, the Police Inspector, during the period when the alleged abuse took place. She claims the abuse started when the child was just 10. The mother further alleges that the father once arranged for an at-home abortion when the girl became pregnant.
She also stated that the father coached the daughter to lie about the abuse, instructing her to blame a teacher if questioned. This alleged deception led to a teacher, who had attempted to help the child, being arrested based on the girl’s coerced testimony. The teacher was later released after the girl recanted her statement.
Emergence of the Truth
The mother recounted that the truth began to surface when the girl was taken to a hospital. A doctor there reportedly encouraged the child to speak freely, assuring her that his intention was to help and ensure accountability. Under this supportive environment, the girl eventually disclosed that her father was the perpetrator.
The doctor subsequently reported the matter to the police, leading to the inspector being summoned for questioning in Bawku. While the child was initially separated from her father during the investigation, she was later returned to his care. The mother eventually took custody of her daughter after the father fell ill and traveled to Kumasi for treatment.
Medical Confirmation and Investigation Concerns
The girl was later referred for further medical examination in Koforidua. Medical tests confirmed that the teenager is HIV positive. The mother tearfully shared this news, adding that her daughter suspects she contracted the virus from her father. The child reportedly recalled her father taking medication for leg pain, which was wrapped in black polythene and sealed with tape.
The mother submitted the medical report to the Agona Jamasi Police Station. However, she expressed deep frustration with the pace of the investigation, stating that she received no updates for approximately five months. When she followed up, she was simply told to wait.
Ongoing Trauma and Seeking Justice
The child, who is preparing to sit for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), has relocated to Koforidua for schooling due to the emotional trauma she has endured. A teacher at her new school contacted the mother after speaking with the girl, prompting another narration of the events by the child.
Following this, the matter was reported to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Koforidua. The case was then referred to the national headquarters for further action. Despite these steps, the mother fears the case may be overlooked or left unresolved due to the lack of clear progress and the alleged slow response from authorities.
Implications and Future Watch
This case highlights critical issues surrounding child sexual abuse, the alleged complicity or negligence of law enforcement officials, and the challenges victims face in seeking justice, particularly when the accused is in a position of authority. The mother’s public appeal underscores the urgency for a thorough and transparent investigation. The public will be watching to see if the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit and national authorities can ensure accountability and provide the necessary support for the victim. The outcome could set a precedent for handling similar sensitive cases within the police force and the broader justice system.
