Bolgatanga Central Member of Parliament (MP), Isaac Adongo, has underscored the importance of “fit-for-purpose” grassroots projects following a recent inspection and engagement tour in Sumbrungu. The MP highlighted ongoing and planned interventions in health, agriculture, and community infrastructure aimed at addressing critical local needs and enhancing livelihoods.
Healthcare Enhancements Underway
Adongo revealed that discussions are in progress with the Municipal Director of Health to assess and facilitate the refurbishment of primary healthcare facilities within the constituency. This initiative seeks to ensure that local health centers are adequately equipped to provide services, particularly in anticipation of potential free primary healthcare benefits for the populace.
The MP also addressed immediate challenges in healthcare staffing, citing an instance where two newly posted medical doctors considered leaving the municipality due to a lack of accommodation. Adongo intervened by personally renting housing for the doctors and is pursuing plans for the construction of permanent medical staff housing.
Boosting Agriculture and Food Security
A significant focus of Adongo’s agenda is the planned launch of a grassroots integrated agriculture project this year. This project aims to strengthen local food systems and improve livelihoods, partly as a response to recent security and economic disruptions affecting cross-border trade, particularly impacting women traders.
The initiative will utilize nine existing dams in the constituency for aquaculture development, including the installation of fish cages and the provision of essential supplies like feed and fingerlings to beneficiaries. Furthermore, five tractors are slated for deployment to support farmers during the upcoming farming season, enhancing agricultural productivity.
Infrastructure Development Across Sumbrungu
During his tour, Adongo inspected a variety of completed and ongoing projects across different electoral areas. These include a classroom block, a maternity ward, a culvert, a police station, nurses’ accommodation, and additional school infrastructure, demonstrating a commitment to improving social amenities.
Specific interventions noted include the construction of the Anateem maternity block and day care center in the Kulbia Electoral Area, along with the provision of grinding mills, boreholes, and bridges in various communities. The Amogrebisi Electoral Area has seen the construction of a culvert, boreholes, and a grinding mill, alongside renovations to the Sumbrungu nurses’ quarters and police station.
Community Feedback and Project Justification
At each stop, Adongo engaged directly with residents, seeking input on development priorities and understanding pressing community needs. Feedback from these interactions, such as the appeal for a rice mill by women in one community, informs future project planning.
The construction of grinding mills, with approximately 15 built across the Sumbrungu area, has been a notable intervention, with residents in Azoribisi highlighting the convenience of having local milling facilities instead of traveling to other towns.
Addressing Public Perception
A video of the MP operating a grinding mill during the visit gained traction on social media, eliciting mixed reactions. While some questioned the prioritization of such projects, others defended them as directly addressing tangible community needs and alleviating burdens for local women.
Looking Ahead
The MP’s emphasis on grassroots projects, particularly those that enhance essential services like healthcare and support fundamental economic activities like agriculture, signals a strategic approach to local development. The success and impact of these interventions, especially the integrated agriculture project and the ongoing healthcare facility upgrades, will be key indicators to watch in the coming months. Continued community engagement and the effective implementation of these ‘fit-for-purpose’ projects will shape the developmental trajectory of Sumbrungu and the wider constituency.
