NAIMOS Dismantles Multinational Galamsey Syndicate in Ashanti Region

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) successfully dismantled an organized multinational illegal mining (galamsey) syndicate in the Ntabanu and Nyameadom communities of the Ahafo Ano South West District in Ghana’s Ashanti Region on Saturday, May 2. Seven individuals, including three Chinese nationals and four Ghanaians, were arrested, and significant mining equipment and vehicles were seized in a decisive operation.

Routine Patrol Uncovers Syndicate’s Operations

The operation began as a routine patrol along the Mankraso operational corridor. Taskforce operatives intercepted a speeding brown Zonda pickup truck leaving a galamsey site at Ntabanu. The driver, later identified as a Chinese national involved in illegal mining, was attempting to flee, apparently alerted to the taskforce’s presence.

Other miners in the vicinity were observed halting their activities and concealing excavators, anticipating enforcement action. However, the swift advance of the taskforce blocked the fleeing driver’s escape, leading to his immediate arrest.

Consequent Engagement Leads to Further Arrests

Following the initial arrest, the taskforce moved to the adjacent community of Nyameadom. There, they intercepted a second group of illegal miners, comprising two Chinese nationals and four Ghanaian operators, who were also attempting to escape the area.

The syndicate’s hasty departure was prompted by the extensive environmental damage they had caused. Large areas of farmland were devastated, and the River Mankran, a vital water source for the local population, had been severely polluted.

The group was attempting to flee in a convoy of three vehicles: a Nissan Navara, a Nissan Oting, and a Toyota Hilux. They had abandoned their excavator at the active mining site in their rush to escape.

Arrests and Recoveries

The first arrest at Ntabanu was Su Zhoxiang, a 43-year-old Chinese national. The six subsequent arrests at Nyameadom included two more Chinese nationals, Wei Renguang (54) and Tan Shishian (50), along with Ghanaian operators Kumi Richard (34), Justice Nkrumah (37), Emmanuel Nyeri (25), and Francis Mintah (23).

A thorough search of the operational areas yielded substantial recoveries. The seized assets included the brown Zonda pickup from Ntabanu, GH₵2,750 in cash, and the Nissan Navara, Nissan Oting, and Toyota Hilux from Nyameadom. An excavator, an aboboyaa tricycle, and expired non-citizen identification cards found on the Chinese suspects were also confiscated.

Legal Ramifications and NAIMOS’s Stance

The four Ghanaian suspects were handed over to the Mankraso District Police Station for investigation and potential prosecution. The three Chinese nationals were transported to NAIMOS Headquarters for further investigation before being transferred to the Ghana Immigration Service for immigration-related actions.

The seized excavator was moved to the NAIMOS logistics holding area in Kumasi for safekeeping. This operation underscores the persistent involvement of foreign nationals in financing, equipping, and executing galamsey activities in Ghana, despite legal prohibitions on foreign participation in small-scale mining.

The confiscation of multiple vehicles and heavy machinery from a single syndicate highlights the complex logistical network supporting organized illegal mining operations in the region. NAIMOS reiterated its commitment to eradicating illegal mining, assuring the public that no operator, foreign or domestic, will be allowed to plunder the nation’s mineral wealth.

Future Outlook

The sustained efforts by NAIMOS signal an intensified crackdown on illegal mining activities across the Ashanti Region and beyond. The public can expect continued enforcement actions targeting active galamsey enclaves. The focus will likely remain on dismantling organized syndicates, particularly those involving foreign nationals, and prosecuting offenders to serve as a deterrent. Observers will be watching for further arrests, the progress of legal proceedings against the apprehended individuals, and the effectiveness of these measures in curbing the widespread environmental degradation caused by galamsey.
