National Labour Commission Declares KATH Doctors' Strike Illegal, Orders Immediate Return to Work

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered the Komfo Anokye Doctors’ Association (KADA) to immediately cease its indefinite strike, deeming the action illegal and improperly initiated. The directive was issued on June 6, 2026, following a review of KADA’s notice which, according to the NLC, contravened Sections 162 and 163 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

Background of the Dispute

KADA initiated the strike in protest of the Health Ministry’s decision to suspend the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. This suspension triggered the doctors’ association to take industrial action, citing operational and administrative grievances.

NLC’s Findings on Strike Procedure

The NLC found that KADA’s strike notice, dated June 6, 2026, was not served according to the legal requirements. The correspondence, addressed to the Board Chairman of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and copied to other high-ranking officials, failed to meet the proper service provisions stipulated by law.
