Nationalizing Mines Won't Automatically Boost State Revenue, Economist Warns

Mineral Economist Wisdom Puplampu of the Minerals Commission has cautioned against the nationalisation of mines in Ghana, asserting that such a move would not inherently increase state revenue. Speaking on Tuesday, May 26, during a JoyBusiness Roundtable focused on Ghana’s extractive sectors, Puplampu advocated for strategic reforms and enhanced financing structures to bolster local participation instead.

Rethinking Local Content and Financing

Puplampu highlighted that Ghana’s existing local content regulations already offer pathways for mining companies to raise capital through stock exchange listings. However, he pointed out that relying solely on the capital market is insufficient for the substantial funding needs of large-scale mining operations.
