National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, urged party supporters and government appointees to unite and collectively work towards ensuring the success of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration during his nationwide “Thank You Tour”. The call came during a town hall meeting in the East Gonja Constituency, emphasizing that the government’s performance directly impacts the party’s credibility.
Collective Responsibility for Governance
Mr. Asiedu Nketia stressed that the responsibility for a successful government extends beyond the President. He called on party members at all levels to remain disciplined, focused, and supportive of government policies, highlighting the close link between the Mahama administration’s fortunes and the NDC’s future.
“Our party members who supported the party to power, we have three years to the end of the tenure of the Mahama government. We need to support the government to succeed,” he stated during the event.
He cautioned against actions that could undermine the administration, asserting that the NDC’s image and credibility hinge on the government’s performance. “If Mahama fails, the embarrassment will be on all of us; Mahama will not only take the fall, but all of us,” he added, underscoring the shared stake in the administration’s outcomes.
Grassroots Engagement and Development Agenda
The NDC Chairman’s tour, currently focused on the Savannah and Northern regions, aims to reconnect with grassroots supporters following the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections. The itinerary includes extensive engagements with traditional authorities and residents to discuss governance and development issues.
The Savannah Regional leg began with visits to Salaga, Kpalbe, Buipe, and Daboya, featuring town hall meetings and courtesy calls on traditional leaders such as the Kpembewura, Buipewura, and Wasipewura. Subsequent engagements in Damongo, Sawla, and Bole included a visit to the Yagbonwura, overlord of the Gonja Kingdom.
The Northern Regional phase of the tour is set to involve a courtesy call on the Yaa-Naa in Yendi, followed by engagements in Tatale, Zabzugu, and other constituencies. The extensive four-day outreach will also cover Kpandai, Wulensi, Bimbilla, Mion, Saboba, Chereponi, Gushegu, Karaga, Tolon, Kumbungu, and Savelugu.
Party officials stated that the tour is designed to strengthen grassroots mobilization and deepen stakeholder engagement. It provides residents with a platform to voice concerns and discuss development priorities directly with party leadership.
Motivating Support and Upholding Party Image
Mr. Asiedu Nketia encouraged party members to actively motivate one another and contribute positively to the government’s development agenda. He reiterated that the success of the administration would bring benefits not only to the NDC but also to the nation as a whole.
This call for unity and focused effort comes at a critical juncture, with approximately three years remaining in the government’s term. The chairman’s message emphasizes that sustained support and constructive engagement from the party base are vital for navigating the remaining period and solidifying the NDC’s position.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining Momentum
The success of President Mahama’s administration will depend significantly on the continued alignment and unified action between the party faithful and government appointees. Asiedu Nketia’s tour highlights the strategic importance of maintaining strong connections with the electorate and ensuring that development initiatives resonate at the grassroots level. The coming months will reveal how effectively this call for collective responsibility translates into tangible progress and public perception, shaping the NDC’s trajectory towards future electoral contests.
