NIA Staff Announce Indefinite Nationwide Strike Over Working Conditions

Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike commencing Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The industrial action stems from unresolved grievances concerning the staff’s working conditions. The directive follows a unanimous decision by the NIA Division’s Divisional Executive Council after a seven-day notice period expired without satisfactory responses from authorities.

Strike Background and Union Directives

The NIA Division of the PSWU issued an official directive instructing all members across the country to cease work. The union emphasized that no member shall report to their duty posts from May 13 until their demands are met.

Prior to the commencement of the strike, workers were directed to wear red attire or red armbands on Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12. This served as a visible symbol of protest and solidarity among the staff.

The union leadership stated that the strike would persist until the authorities formally address and resolve the concerns raised by the workers. A joint statement signed by Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor Bismark and Divisional Chairman Francis Bangfudem Nyuzaghl urged members to maintain unity.
